We are proud of the food that we serve and the Fly-Half Bar and Grill has been a popular destination with locals for many years. Eating is as formal or informal as you want to make it with lots of eating options. Our lunch menu changes almost daily and has lighter options. Our menu is available for dinner 7 days per week. Food is served all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Andy McQueen and his brigade have a simple philosophy - seasonal produce, locally sourced, beautifully cooked and presented simply. Bread is baked fresh daily, icecreams and sorbets are all homemade, as are all of our desserts. All of our steaks are butchered in house from the finest Scottish Beef. At least 95% of our fresh ingredients are now supplied by producers in East Lothian. There is no set menu in the Fly Half Bar and Grill so you can choose whether you have one course, two or all three followed by an Illy coffee.
The Nether Abbey Hotel started life as a grand seaside house at the turn of the 19th century. As with many buildings of this era, each room has its own character with high ceilings on the first floor and coombes and fireplaces in most second-floor rooms - the original servants quarters. However, one thing that all twelve rooms and bathrooms have in common is that they have all been renovated to an exceptionally high standard.
East Lothian is truly the mecca of the golfing world, with some twenty courses all within easy reach (20 minutes maximum) of North Berwick - which itself boasts two magnificent courses. "I will be delighted to help organize your golfing holiday whether you know the area well or you are a first time visitor to North berwick. I don't play golf myself but I have spent the last 4 years learning about the needs of golfers! Last year I booked hundreds of tee times for our guests. I am happy to offer guidance on price and to book tee times on your behalf, taking all the administration away from you." Jela Stewart.
North Berwick is a charming seaside town with sandy beaches, a picturesque harbour and a bustling high street surrounded by beautiful countryside. North Berwick in Bloom in 2010 won the Gold medal in the Beautiful Scotland in Bloom competition - a reflection of the effort that goes into making North Berwick a very special town. Only 30 minutes by train from Edinburgh, North Berwick enjoys superb coastal views of the Firth of Forth with its islands of Fidra (inspiration for R. L. Stevenson's Treasure island), Craigleith with its puffins and the Bass Rock, the largest gannetry in the world.
The Nether Abbey Hotel has been owned by successive generations of the same family since 1957. In 2004 the Hotel shut for extensive renovations and refurbishment with simply stunning results. Although priding ourselves on old fashioned personal service there is nothing staid or old fashioned about the Hotel. The public areas are open plan, cool, contemporary and with all the sophistication you would expect from a city centre bar and restaurant.
We take great pride in the food and drink we offer with the emphasis on quality and fresh local ingredients – there’s a good chance that the guy sitting next to you at the Bar will have caught the Sea Bass you had for dinner! The hotel's twelve bedrooms were closed in December 2006, extensively renovated and refurbished and re-opened some four months later on 31st March 2007.The Nether Abbey Hotel is well placed within North Berwick to take full advantage of the area's fine beaches, the wide variety of outdoor pursuits available, the town's Sports Centre with indoor swimming pool and the new Scottish Seabird Centre, located at North Berwick harbour. And why not take advantage of reduced rates at the McDonald Marine Spa?
In addition, the area boasts some 19 superb golf courses, ranging from the Open Championship Links at Muirfield, to Musselburgh Old links, on which golf has been played longer than anywhere else in the world. We can arrange course bookings and tee-off times at no extra charge and organize transport.
